25 & 26 May - Wallagoot to Eden and thereabouts

Up betimes on the 25th of May to say a fond farewell to Wallagoot, Mrs P's "rellies" and to the famous Brick McCracken.

The reason for the Brick's fame is, apparently, not well known.

The Brick suffers from one or more severe allergies and is unable to eat any food other than dry kibble. If the Brick consumes anything else his skin goes bright pink (which, no doubt, distresses the Brick but is not why he is called Brick) but more disturbingly, the Brick will commence to break wind with alarming frequency producing an odour so foul that even experienced veterinarians cannot withstand the onslaught NOR explain the biochemical processes that are the cause (which, no doubt, distresses the veterinarians).
Brick McCracken - able to produce farts that seem to be thicker than bricks!

Backtracking a little, the Prop and Mrs P made their way back to Tathra to take breakfast at the Tathra Wharf only to find that this fine1860 structure is undergoing a comprehensive heritage restoration.

An unserviceable pile being replaced with Turpentine or Yanderra  (Syncarpia glomulifera). Should last another 160 years.

After breakfast we made for Pambula to check out a seaside caravan park but the weather was so dreary we had to leave.
Pambula, nice spot on a sunny day but too dreary for the Prop

Arriving at Eden just before noon we took a quick stroll down Imlay Street (the main street in town)

The Australasia Hotel has been recently refurbished to a very high (but slightly gaudy) standard so the Prop decided to have a glass of on-tap alcoholic Ginger Beer. Mrs P settled for a non-alcoholic Lemonade.

On the same block stands the Great Southern Hotel - a more traditional Federation era pub.

Diagonnally opposite the Great Southern - now a physiotherapy practice!

Speaking of physiotherapy, it seems no that the citizens of Eden may be very health- conscious. Also in Imlay Street is the SALT Body Boutique which offers a stunning array of therapies like "cosmeceutical facials", "body packages" and "eyelash lifts" (the latter sounds like it may be a procedure used to awaken somnolent bureaucrats)
The Eden Body Boutique - rubbing SALT in cosmetic wounds

It is also pretty clear that the locals enjoy living on the coast so much that even in death they prefer the smell of fresh salt air.

Bermagui has its Blue Pool (as the Prop now well remembers) but Eden has a Pink Pool - well, it would be a pool if it was full of water instead of sand!

Perfick!

Up betimes on 26 May 2023 to attend to some matters of personal administration (i e., laundry).

The Prop also had the opportunity to check the state of the nylon cable ties which retain the Tadpole's spare tyre. Perfick!

The "Toyota-Approved Spare Tyre Retainer Solution" - still yellow and still going strong

Then, a liesurely walk around Lake Curalo on the Allan Gibson Boardwalk.

Not sure who Allan Gibson was but he obviously did enough to have a very extensive boardwalk named for or after him.

Not as evil as Ben Boyd I hope (see below).

Well done Allan!

Eden is a prime location for spotting whales as they seasonally migrate north and south. However, the Prop is unconvinced that this association fully justifies the local Association Football Club calling themselves the "Isuzu Lite  Killer Whales"! Determination on the pitch is one thing but homicide is a horse of a very different colour!
Killer Whales United!

In the afternoon we drove to the Beowa National Park (formerly Ben Boyd National Park). The execrable Mr Boyd built a tower which he hoped to use as a "private" lighthouse but he never got permission so involved himself in the slave trade instead - before going bankrupt!

Mr Boyd's tower - not a suitable lighthouse, it isn't even round!

24 May 2023 - Wallagoot and Environs

Up betimes to travel to Tura Beach to pay a visit to an aged relative of Mrs P (not "the aged P" from Great Expectations).

Then back to Wallagoot via Lake Wallagoot and the surprisingly named "Hobart Beach Campground".
View from Hobart Beach Campground

The capital city of Tasmania, Hobart, was named after Robert Hobart, the 4th Earl of Buckinghamshire. Maybe this campground was too?

This was followed by a visit to Nelson Beach  in the Mimosa Rocks National Park north of Tathra; a very attractive location.

Sightseeing done, we headed to the Tathra Beach Bowling Club universally known locally as "the Bowlo" for a very satisfying evening meal.

Unfortunately, there is no "happy hour" nor meat tray raffle on Wednesdays but the Prop's lamb shank and vegetables went very nicely with a "double" glass of Shiraz.

23 May 2023 - Bermagui to Wallagoot

Part the First
Up betimes but now on the fizz with Mrs P's relatives and no time to blog so can't be bothered trying to say anything sensible.

Will tomorrow reveal dramatic events which occurred at Bermagui earlier today!

Stay tuned!!

Part the Second
Before getting on the fizz with Mrs P's relatives at Wallagoot there is much that occurred in Bermagui that must be conveyed to the reader (note the deliberate use of the singular).

As usual we were up betimes and made our way to the "Eurolicious Café" in Bermagui for a delightful breakfast.
 Eurolicious Café, Bermagui - nice breakfast with a 70's rock n roll soundtrack

Following breakfast, and at the Prop's insistence, we returned to the Blue Pool in the hope of obtained a photograph of said pool bathed in morning sunlight

Naturally, given the events of 9 years ago when Mrs P fractured both her wrists, the Prop was being astute to ensure that there was no repetition of that event. To that end, the Prop walked directly in front of Mrs P to prevent any fall...

Inexplicably, incredibly, unbelievably (choose your preferred adverb) as the Prop reached the locus in quo of the 2014 incident, the Prop lost his footing on the VERY same step as Mrs P had done 9 years earlier!!

The result was that the Prop fell headlong forwards (in very much the same way as Mrs P had done 9 years ago). Fortunately, the Prop was not seriously hurt - two grazed knees and a bit of a left wrist strain.

According to Mrs P, the Prop then looked up at her with a look of utter bewilderment on his face.

How a man whose wife had been seriously injured 9 years previously and who was taking great care to avoid any repetition of that event could possibly have contrived to unintentionally do precisely the same thing beggars belief!

As the Prop lay prostrate on the ground a very nice young couple who had been nearby, rushed to the Prop's aid. The female then volunteered that she herself had had a similar experience!
A step too far! The offending step at the top of the Blue Pool stairway - note the paint on the edge has all but worn away.

A close-up picture of the Prop's knees taken after the incident - not a pretty sight!

In some discomfort the Prop managed to make his way down to the Blue Pool proper but was devastated to find that it was neither sunlit not blue!
The (alleged) Blue Pool

However, all was not lost. Just next to the Blue Pool we sighted a large number of seals cavorting in the ocean appearing to have a whale of a time.

Seals cavorting - Seals Look Out!

A lovely view of the township of Bermagui

After a full morning of intense excitement in Bermagui we set forth for Wallagoot, home of the famous Staffordshire Terrier, "Brick McCracken"

Having introduced ourselves to "The Brick" we wasted no time in getting on the fizz - see Part the First (above).

Perfick!

22 May 2023 - Bateman's Bay to Bermagui

Up betimes to practice saying "Bermagui" (say: Burma-Gyooey).

The name Bermagui is derived from the Dyirringani word,  permageua, possibly meaning "canoe with paddles".

The Prop never ceases to be amazed at the arrogance (or stupidity) of English colonists who didn't seem to give a fig for the correct pronunciation of the names of places that they colonised. For example:
Yangon = Rangoon
Beijing = Peking
Mumbai = Bombay
Kolkata = Calcutta
permageua = Bermagui

We decided to take the coast road rather than the highway, and very glad we did. On a sunny and near cloudless day like today,  the coastal scenery is outstanding.

In the early 1960's Mrs P spent most summer holidays with her family at Tuross Head and today, for the first time, we were able to locate one of the holiday "apartments" that her family used to rent.
Sixty-odd year old rental accommodation at Tuross Head, possibly formerly known as "Ramona"

Unfortunately there was no trace of the nearby old moving picture theatre at which Mrs P remembers watching the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock version of "The 39 Steps" - about 30 years after it was released!

No trace of the old theatre - not even one step!

Formerly Nossiter's Boat Hire, now also a café - no Nossiters nearby!

Laing's Boat Hire, Tuross Head - possibly no longer a going concern

Nostalgia nurtured, we headed for Bermagui to revisit the place where, in 2014, Mrs P shattered both of her wrists while attempting to watch some whales!

 No nostalgia there!
