19 May 2023 - Narromine to Cowra (via Yeoval, Cumnock, Molong & Orange)

Up betimes to greet yet another very fresh morning. The plan was to take a somewhat indirect route to Cowra to take a look at a few other towns and cities.

That said, it is a notorious fact that the Prop is not reknowned for either making, or sticking to, plans.

This may help to explain why, in yesterday's summary of events, the Prop unintentionally elided any mention of our visit to the Tom Perry Park in Narromine.

The Prop has no idea who Tom Perry is (or may have been  - possibly a former mayor?) but in this very park stands a statue of Narromine's favourite son, the Australian test cricketer, Glen McGrath.

Having departed Narromine the Tadpole made its way to Yeoval, a smallish settlement with a Royal" Hotel, a combined Service Station & Takeaway, a fine example of bespoke bucolic architecture  and Ye Olde Trading Post.

Having stumbled upon "Ye Olde Trading Post", it occurred to the Prop that the true name of this town might really be Ye Oval. Sure enough, just around the corner the Prop found local Oval at which the local school athletic carnival was in progress!

(The Prop is obliged to point out at this juncture that Mrs P wishes it to be known that she does not approve of the Prop's  "Ye Oval" wordplay which she says is infantile and not at all funny and completely disassociates herself from this blog.)

On then 30 or so kilometres further to Cumnock only to find yet another Royal Hotel.

Drove through Molong which also has an oval with unusually long grass ("mow long" - see what the Prp did there?)
Molong! It's been good to know ya!

Then on to Orange for a quick look about this city of 40,000. At an elevation of over 800 metres, Orange is a good deal cooler than the surrounding lower country and being heavily planted with European trees is very reminiscent of parts of the UK. Autumn in Orange plainly extends well into late May so that even today Orange was, well, quite orange!
Orange and a little bit of red and yellow too!

Stopped for lunch at Cargo. No food to be had at the Cargo Inn but the Cargo Mini Mart was doing a roaring trade in deep-fried delicacies which the barmaid at the Inn told us we were welcome to bring back to the pub.

Arrived in Cowra about 3.00pm and took a short walk through town but saved the full "Cowra Breakout" for tomorrow morning.
