22 May 2023 - Bateman's Bay to Bermagui

Up betimes to practice saying "Bermagui" (say: Burma-Gyooey).

The name Bermagui is derived from the Dyirringani word,  permageua, possibly meaning "canoe with paddles".

The Prop never ceases to be amazed at the arrogance (or stupidity) of English colonists who didn't seem to give a fig for the correct pronunciation of the names of places that they colonised. For example:
Yangon = Rangoon
Beijing = Peking
Mumbai = Bombay
Kolkata = Calcutta
permageua = Bermagui

We decided to take the coast road rather than the highway, and very glad we did. On a sunny and near cloudless day like today,  the coastal scenery is outstanding.

In the early 1960's Mrs P spent most summer holidays with her family at Tuross Head and today, for the first time, we were able to locate one of the holiday "apartments" that her family used to rent.
Sixty-odd year old rental accommodation at Tuross Head, possibly formerly known as "Ramona"

Unfortunately there was no trace of the nearby old moving picture theatre at which Mrs P remembers watching the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock version of "The 39 Steps" - about 30 years after it was released!

No trace of the old theatre - not even one step!

Formerly Nossiter's Boat Hire, now also a café - no Nossiters nearby!

Laing's Boat Hire, Tuross Head - possibly no longer a going concern

Nostalgia nurtured, we headed for Bermagui to revisit the place where, in 2014, Mrs P shattered both of her wrists while attempting to watch some whales!

 No nostalgia there!

The Blue Pool - scene of the 2014 ordeal

The Blue Pool - a public bathing facility carved out of solid rock

More solid rock at Bermagui - yet to be carved! Perfick!
